The road runs close to Ecclesall Woods, 350 acres of ancient woodland previously used for timber and white coal. You’ll find Q-Pits in the woods, these distinctive circular pits with a channel produced carbonised wood or “white coal” used to smelt lead ore from the mid-16th to the late 17th centuries. Things you didn’t know about Gloucester: Until Hubert Cecil Booth (born here in 1871) patented his version, vacuum cleaners used to blow dirt away rather than suck it up. The Roman town of Glevum had a population of about 7,000 – it took nearly 1,800 years for it to reach this number again. In the early 19th Century one in five people in Gloucester were employed making pins. The Walls Ice Cream factory in Gloucester is the largest in Europe. John Stafford-Smith, who wrote the music to the US national anthem ‘Star Spangled Banner’, is buried in Gloucester Cathedral – he based the tune on an old English drinking song.

Situated in rural Hertfordshire, on the border with Essex, Bishop’s Stortford was a thriving market town throughout the Middle Ages. Famous for its coaching houses it is not hard to imagine the mail coaches screeching to a halt for a well-earned break on their way between London, Cambridge and Newmarket. In the mid-19th century, the arrival of the railway laid the foundation for Bishops Stortford’s present importance as a market town and as a commuter area for the City of London. Famous local connections include Cecil Rhodes, born here in 1853 (but buried in the Matobo Hills Zimbabwe) and Russell Brand, comedian and actor, who once boarded at Hockerill College.

Weston owes its growth and prosperity almost entirely to the Victorian era boom in seaside holidays. Until the early 19th century, it was a small windswept village of about 30 houses. The opening of the railway in 1841 saw thousands of visitors heading to the town from Bristol whilst many mining families took the paddle steamers from South Wales. Rapid evolution continued and at one time in the 1980s it was the fastest growing municipality in Europe. By 2006 Weston’s population was close to 78,000. Weston is still a popular tourist town with attractions including the Sea Aquarium, the Grand Pier, a helicopter museum and the miles of clean sandy beach.

Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire and third largest after Salisbury and Swindon. Referred to as Straburg in the Domesday Book, from the 13th century the town established a successful wool and clothing industry. Despite resistance to the introduction of new technology during the 19th century Trowbridge established a reputation as the ‘Manchester of the West’ with 15 woollen factories comparable with Rochdale at the time. At one point Ashton Mill alone had over 1000 operatives. The industry declined throughout the 20th century with the last mill closing in 1982. Trowbridge is now best known as a centre for local government and communications.

Hendon has been a human settlement since at least Roman times. The word ‘Hendon’ evolved from ‘Hendun’, which means simply ‘on the high hill’ and Hendon has certainly always been a high flier. In the late 19th century there was a strong manufacturing industry here, mainly in motoring and aviation. Here you will find an RAF Museum on the site of what used to be the Hendon Hippodrome. This Hippodrome was extremely important to the RAF during the Second World War and also made some now common innovations; here airmail was first tested, as was the first parachute jump from an aircraft, the first flights undertaken at night, and even the first aerial protection of a city.

Nearly 2000 years old, the historic walled city of York in North Yorkshire has had a long, rich and varied history. The Romans founded York in AD 71 and for two years the entire Roman Empire was actually ruled from there. After passing through the hands of the Angles and the Vikings it was then ravaged by William The Conqueror. Then in the 17th century it featured in the English Civil war before the dawn of the more tranquil modern era. In the 19th Century York emerged as a major centre for the railways, which in turn was instrumental in its development as a hub for both chocolate, notably Rowntree’s and Terry’s, and tourism.

Situated on the Wirral peninsula, Merseyside, Upton is a large village roughly central between Birkenhead and West Kirkby. Prior to the industrial development of Birkenhead in the mid 19th century Upton was the primary economic centre of northern Wirral being home to a weekly market and two important annual fairs. Much of the early village has been rebuilt but it still contains a few of the older houses including Upton Hall. Upton’s small slice of archaeological fame came when a rune-stone was discovered in the ruins of its Norman parish church. The stone is now kept in Chester at the Grosvenor Museum.
