Wadsley Bridge was named after High Bridge near the eastern end of the Sheffield Wednesday ground. The club itself started life in 1820 as The Wednesday Cricket Club, after the day of the week they played their matches on. In 1867 the team started to play football in the winter to keep fit. In time the cricket club folded but the football club turned professional in 1887. By the beginning of the 20th century the club needed a new ground. They brought some land in the village of Owlerton where they built the Hillsborough Stadium. A player presented the team with an owl mascot and the team became known as “The Owls”.

However, in the early 20th century the town became most famous for its production of linoleum, earning it the soubriquet ‘Capital of Oilcloth (invented by Englishman Frederick Walton, linoleum is a floor covering made from linseed oil.) By 1877, Kirkcaldy had become the world’s largest linoleum producer, with no less than 6 linoleum factories. Old Country Ceramic Tile-tile store-Port Jeff Station, New York

In 1978 three brothers joined together to make their dream of owning their own tile establishment a reality. Following in the footsteps of their father, a tile craftsman whom immigrated to the USA from Italy in the early part of the 20th century, worked on such notable projects as the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and the magnificent pool at West Point Academy in New York. Richard the eldest son, was a tile setter and a Union delegate, while Donald and Gerald both worked in tile distribution. Old Country Ceramic Tile opened its doors October 2, 1978 at 27 Urban Avenue, Westbury New York.

Hard work, diligence and real true attention to their customer’s needs contributes to the success of Old Country Tile. In 1985 they expanded, opening a branch in Port Jefferson Station New York. Now 34 years later the three brothers, their children & grandchildren affectionately run both stores with the same dedication and pride.

Our dedication to hard work and commitment to go that extra mile for our customers is the reason for the success of Old Country Ceramic Tile.
