The Isle of Stepney is separated from Kent by a channel called the Swale and off the Swale is a creek. It is near this creek that the industrial town of Sittingbourne sits. Underneath the town is small stream called the Bourne, upon which the town also sits – literally Sitting-on-the-Bourne. Sittingbourne has actually been a ‘sitting’ or resting place since the Middle Ages, when it was used as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. King Henry V ‘sat’ in the local Red Lion public house on his way back from battle and Queen Victoria stayed at the old Rose Inn. Today Sittingbourne has a thriving fruit preserving and packing industry. It is also the largest producer of newsprint in the world.

Wadsley Bridge was named after High Bridge near the eastern end of the Sheffield Wednesday ground. The club itself started life in 1820 as The Wednesday Cricket Club, after the day of the week they played their matches on. In 1867 the team started to play football in the winter to keep fit. In time the cricket club folded but the football club turned professional in 1887. By the beginning of the 20th century the club needed a new ground. They brought some land in the village of Owlerton where they built the Hillsborough Stadium. A player presented the team with an owl mascot and the team became known as “The Owls”.

Chesterfield Road in Sheffield starts at Toll Bar Bridge on the Meers Brook. Along with the River Sheaf it formed the boundary between the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia. Nearby at the southern entrance to Meersbrook Park is one of Sheffield’s oldest buildings, the half-timbered Bishops’ House. Built around 1500 for brothers John and Geoffrey Blythe (who became Bishops) records show that William Blythe, a farmer and scythe manufacturer, was living there in 1627. He ran the Blythe Wheel, where Rushdale Terrace is now, to grind corn and as a sharpening grinding wheel. Famous sons of the city include Michael Palin, Arctic Monkey Alex Turner and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker.

Split across the middle by the River Leam, Leamington’s name comes from the Anglo-Saxon for “farm of the River Leam”. It’s one of the only towns in the UK to have both a prefix and a suffix to its name; the suffix “Spa” came in 1814 with the opening of the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths, which attracted hundreds of visitors for the purportedly curative powers of the local waters, while the “Royal” prefix was granted by Queen Victoria, who visited the town twice. The first tennis club in the world was founded in Leamington in 1872 and it was here that the modern rules of lawn tennis were created. “The Wickedest Man In The World”, Aleister Crowley was born here.

Kidderminster today is a thriving town and home to around 55,000 people. Brintons founded the country’s modern carpet industry in the town in 1785 and it became so important to the local economy that the local newspaper is still named The Shuttle after the shuttles used on the carpet looms. Nowadays major firms, such as the Sealine, the luxury yacht company, and Roxel, which makes the rocket motors for a wide range of missiles, have replaced the carpet industry. Blackwell Street, where Domino’s Pizza is located, was where Sir Rowland Hill, inventor of the modern postal system, was born in 1795.
