Amuse your friends with these two Bagshot facts: Father of eighteen children, William Davis was a respected local farmer. However for forty years he led a secret life as a notorious highwayman – he once disguised himself, raced up the road and robbed his own landlord who he had just paid his rent to. When finally caught, Davis was hung on Bagshot Heath in 1689. People had always been a bit suspicious as he always paid his debts in gold – and became known as the Golden Farmer. During the Second World War, when Bagshot Park was the regimental headquarters of the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department, a prankster placed a notice by the pond that read “Do not walk on the water”.

Here are three fun facts to tell your friends about Aldershot while you eat your Domino’s pizza: Just before Aldershot became the Home of the British Army at the time of the Crimean War in 1854 its population was only 875. The Beatles came to the town in 1961 but the event was so poorly advertised only 18 people turned up. The town’s Statue of the Duke of Wellington was originally at Hyde Park Corner in London but Queen Victoria claimed that it ruined her view from Buckingham Palace so the statue was removed to Aldershot where they thought the Army would appreciate it more.
