The Isle of Stepney is separated from Kent by a channel called the Swale and off the Swale is a creek. It is near this creek that the industrial town of Sittingbourne sits. Underneath the town is small stream called the Bourne, upon which the town also sits – literally Sitting-on-the-Bourne. Sittingbourne has actually been a ‘sitting’ or resting place since the Middle Ages, when it was used as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. King Henry V ‘sat’ in the local Red Lion public house on his way back from battle and Queen Victoria stayed at the old Rose Inn. Today Sittingbourne has a thriving fruit preserving and packing industry. It is also the largest producer of newsprint in the world.

In the Doomsday Book this beautiful area was known as Gressegraua, which over the years changed until in the 15th Century it became Kesgrave. Originally this was a small Danish/Saxon settlement where travellers and pilgrims could rest at the local Inn, on their way to the Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Grace in nearby Ipswich, and was also popular with Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon.

Popular with pilgrims throughout the middle Ages, these days you can also find pilgrims of a different kind checking out Bury St Edmunds’ famous Greene King Brewery and Britain’s smallest pub, The Nutshell.
