The Isle of Stepney is separated from Kent by a channel called the Swale and off the Swale is a creek. It is near this creek that the industrial town of Sittingbourne sits. Underneath the town is small stream called the Bourne, upon which the town also sits – literally Sitting-on-the-Bourne. Sittingbourne has actually been a ‘sitting’ or resting place since the Middle Ages, when it was used as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. King Henry V ‘sat’ in the local Red Lion public house on his way back from battle and Queen Victoria stayed at the old Rose Inn. Today Sittingbourne has a thriving fruit preserving and packing industry. It is also the largest producer of newsprint in the world.

In the centre of Shepherd’s Bush is the well known green, an 8-acre expanse of common ground. In the past it was believed that this green, and the area that is now built upon, was a resting place for shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market in central London, hence its name. The area is also famous for the Shepherds Bush Empire music venue, which has seen the likes of David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan and continues to draw top name bands. A Grade II listed building in the vicinity was used as the location for the Acme Factory in the quirky cartoon comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit, starring Bob Hoskins.
